if you want to go really cheap try Colonial House Inn (in chelsea) but if you want to go nicer try Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca. I love Tribeca! And of course Bryant Park. And some cool places to eat are Il Bastardo it's my favorite because i love pasta. Anyways hope this helped! have fun p.s. dont forget the garment district!

Food: I dunno if you're planning on venturing into harlem, but if so you should totally hit up Dinosaur Barbeque. It's Ay-mazing![is it bad that I assume you like BBQ and such, simply because you're southern?] For some simple food, you could try Peanut, butter and Co. It's one of my faves, really small BUT they have great pb&j's!
Hotels: Well my brother spent his prom night at The Gershwin Hotel[Around 27th and Madison.] It was pretty cheap but really pretty. I know models tend to stay there when they're in nyc. They also have like dorm rooms with 5-10 beds. Really cheap rooms, but I guess you can meet other people that way? I'll try to find the site for you if I can. The Hotel Chelsea isn't too expensive either.
Events: During July there's always a bunch of free concerts. A few at rock center in the early morning, McCarren park in Greenpoint,BKLYN on sunday mornings and some in Central Park. [This was all as of last year, Idk if it's still going on this year with the economy and everything.] Also, for stand-by tickets to SNL, you can try and go to the "NBC Studios" marquee on the 50th St. side of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Nothing's guaranteed though =/
Tips: Don't talk to strangers! No seriously, don't talk to strangers. Central Park is beautiful at night, but please don't go in there alone at night. We all want Kate to come back in one piece:]
Hope that helps:]

It's Paigee! I have been in NYC... And I agree with andreanyc. try that. But I just don't like downtown nyc. idk why. But the photography set something like the urban flowers or something like that ,ake downtown living seem a bit better to me. :D

I went to verve hotel in queens, you just need to cross the bridge(5 minutes away) and you're in the city. It's really cheap and near Manhattan. :D

There is this gorgeous small hotel (I'm not sure the price range- not too expensive I'm sure ) on Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side... It is just darling and in an amazing neighborhood. It is called Wales Hotel. I think it might be around $200 per night... Not sure where this is in your price range, but the nice thing is that there are so many nice cafes (some cheap!) and stores around that area, and you really don't have to worry about area.
